What does living on the road to Galveston do to your timing?
Everyone going to the island comes past your house.
I-45 is the only freeway onto Galveston, so all of it funnels through La Marque, and that cuts both ways. A group leaving here is standing on the Seawall while a Houston group is still crawling through League City. But on summer weekends, holiday weekends and festival dates, the freeway and the frontage roads through town carry the whole city: southbound Saturday morning, northbound from Sunday afternoon into the evening.
The trick locals already know is to travel against the flow. A Saturday evening run down to the island is smooth. So is a Sunday morning drive north into Houston. It is the Sunday afternoon pickup heading north, or the mid-morning Saturday one heading south, that turns a 40-minute trip into something else. Typical ranges from I-45 at FM 1764, outside the island rush:
- Texas City: 5 to 10 minutes
- The Galveston causeway: 10 to 15 minutes
- The Strand and the Seawall: 20 to 25 minutes
- Space Center Houston and Clear Lake: 25 to 30 minutes
- Hobby Airport (HOU): 35 to 45 minutes
- Downtown Houston and NRG Park: 40 to 50 minutes
- Bush Intercontinental (IAH): 60 to 75 minutes
Taking a church or school group to Space Center Houston
It is the rare outing where the eight-year-olds and the grandparents both want to stay longer.
Space Center Houston, the visitor center for NASA's Johnson Space Center, sits on NASA Parkway in Clear Lake, a straight shot up I-45. It handles school and tour buses every day of the week, so drop-off and bus parking are settled ground rather than something you have to negotiate. Get the tickets and any tram tour times first, then build the pickup backwards from them.
Thirty or more riders do better in a 40 Passenger Shuttle Bus, where everyone faces forward and the lunches have somewhere to live. Our church events page and field trip guide get into chaperones and headcounts, and the safety checklist is a two-minute read for whoever is in charge of the adults. The NASA area page covers what else is worth stopping for nearby.
Count heads at the bus, not at the door. The door always lies.

Where should the bus meet you?
On a through street, most of the time.
La Marque's neighbourhoods are mostly older and low-slung, with modest lots and cars along the curb, so a bus can handle the main streets but not every short side street behind them. Church lots on the main roads are the steadiest meeting points, partly because many churches in town already park their own buses and vans. Ask before anyone leaves a car there for the evening.
Rain is the other variable. Some of the low streets near the bayous hold water in a real downpour. If a storm is sitting on the forecast, shift the pickup to a higher main road and tell the driver early rather than working it out from the front porch.
A Galveston night that dodges the island traffic
Being this close to the causeway buys you hours.
Across the Houston area, about 53% of inquiries with a requested duration asked for three to four hours, and from La Marque that window genuinely covers dinner on the Seawall or the Strand, a walk, and the ride back, with most of the booking spent off the bus rather than on it. Pull out after 5 pm on a Saturday and the day-trippers are already streaming north past you.
Our Galveston page explains where a large vehicle can stop once you are on the island, which is a bigger question down there than the drive ever is. For 14 to 18 people on a birthday night, the 18 Passenger Party Bus is the comfortable fit.
Sharing a ride with Texas City, Dickinson and Hitchcock
The mainland towns sit close enough that a spread-out group is not really a problem.
Texas City is next door, Dickinson is about 10 minutes north on I-45, and Hitchcock is just southwest. Order the stops so the furthest one from your destination goes first and the route never doubles back on itself.
Combining households also tends to push a group up a size. Across the Houston area, about 49% of inquiries with a group size were for 11 to 20 people and about 13% were for 21 to 30, so two families together often land in the next bracket without meaning to. On money, about 47% of Houston-area inquiries with a recorded historical quote fell between $1,000 and $1,499. Read that as what has been quoted before on all sorts of trips, not as a price, since yours will follow your date, vehicle, hours and route. The group split calculator breaks the total down by household once you have a real number in hand.
Furthest pickup first. Everything else is a scenic tour of your own county.
