Everything goes over the causeway. That is the whole story.

From Dickinson the island is a straight run south on I-45 through La Marque, and the causeway is the only direct road link from the Houston side. When it slows, your trip slows, and there is no clever detour to take instead. The Bolivar ferry and the San Luis Pass bridge at the far west end are technically other ways on, and neither is any use to you from here.

Going the other way, Dickinson is far enough south that a trip into Houston covers most of the length of the Gulf Freeway, through League City and Webster and everything in between. Typical ranges from I-45 at FM 517:

The terminal's check-in window sets the clock, not your group, and that changes what you want under you. Once a party bus is full of people there is very little room left for suitcases. A family of eight to twelve travelling with bags is better off in the 14 passenger executive sprinter, and a bigger party wants a shuttle bus with a proper luggage area rather than a dance floor.

Give yourself an hour of padding on a summer Saturday, because cruise traffic and beach traffic are using the same bridge. Coming home is the leg people underestimate: ships dock early in the morning, but passengers leave the terminal in waves over several hours, so set the pickup for when your group realistically expects to be out and make sure the driver has a phone number that will answer. Galveston's Mardi Gras runs through the weekends before Fat Tuesday, with parades along the Seawall and through downtown near the Strand. Dickinson flooded badly during Hurricane Harvey in 2017, and heavy rain still pools on the low streets near the bayou and along parts of FM 517. If storms are in the forecast for your date, a meeting point on higher ground near the freeway saves everyone a stressful twenty minutes, and a little slack in the schedule saves the rest of the day.

Hurricane season runs June through November, and I-45 is the evacuation route off the island and out of the county both. When something is sitting in the Gulf the week of your trip, the conversation about moving the date goes better three days out than three hours out, so get the weather and cancellation terms in writing when you book. Dickinson's neighbours are close enough that collecting them costs almost nothing.

Texas City is 10 to 20 minutes east, La Marque is just south on I-45, and League City is just north. The order matters more than the distance. Heading to the island, start with the pickup farthest north so the vehicle gathers people on its way down; heading into Houston, start in La Marque and work up.
