The short answer

December outings in Houston come in two shapes. One is an office party transfer for 20 to 40 people on a large party bus or a shuttle bus. The other is a neighborhood lights tour for 12 to 24 on a mid-size party bus over three or four hours. Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays in December go first, so ask in October or early November and send a headcount that already counts the plus-ones.

The holiday season crowds a lot of events into a few weeks. Office parties, family gatherings, ugly-sweater bar crawls, Christmas light tours, and New Year's Eve celebrations all compete for calendar space and parking spots. A party bus or limo rental during the holidays solves the parking problem, keeps groups together across multiple stops, and removes any concern about who is driving home after the eggnog. December dates fill early, so reach out as soon as your event details are firm.

Typical group

Holiday groups vary from 12–24 for a neighborhood lights tour to 20–40 for an office party, with larger company events needing more than one vehicle.

Timing

December weekends — particularly the two Saturdays before Christmas and New Year's Eve — are among the hardest dates of the year to book. Ask for a quote in October or early November for mid-December dates. A lights tour usually fits in three to four hours.

Vehicles

Limo sprinters for small office dinners, mid-size party buses for lights tours and friend-group crawls, and large party buses or shuttle buses for office parties of 20 to 40.

Holiday Parties by the numbers

These figures come from our own records of what groups asked for, which makes them a better planning guide than guesswork.

49%

About 49% of Houston inquiries with a valid group size involved 11–20 passengers.

53%

About 53% of Houston inquiries with a valid requested duration asked for 3–4 hours.

72%

About 72% of Houston inquiries with a recorded quoted-vehicle field mentioned a party bus.

47%

About 47% of Houston inquiries with a recorded historical quote from $300 to $10,000 fell in the $1,000–$1,499 range.

Based on historical inquiries in our proprietary Houston transportation dataset (2023–Aug. 2026). These figures describe past inquiries, not bookings or current prices. Your quote depends on date, vehicle, hours, and route.

How big do December groups get?

Bigger than the rest of the year, and it shows up in the numbers.

Across all Houston requests in our inquiry records, about 49% were for 11 to 20 passengers. For events scheduled in the fourth quarter of 2024 that share climbed to about 64%, with only about 22% for ten or fewer. One quarter, small sample, so treat it as a lean. It does match what December actually looks like: teams, departments, supper clubs and extended families rather than couples.

For the common 15 to 22 person outing, the 24 Passenger Party Bus leaves room for coats, gift bags and the two people who RSVP the night before. Office parties that invite spouses tend to land near 30, which is 34 Passenger Party Bus country. If the ride is simply office to restaurant and back and nobody needs club lighting, the 40 Passenger Shuttle Bus gives everyone a forward-facing seat and a calmer trip. Run your real number through the guest count calculator first, because a plus-one policy can move the total by a third.

Which lights are worth seeing from a bus?

River Oaks is the one everybody means.

The large homes along and around River Oaks Boulevard decorate seriously, the streets take a mid-size bus without drama, and the loop sits ten minutes from Montrose and Upper Kirby restaurants. Traffic through the neighborhood crawls on the two weekends before Christmas, so a Tuesday gets you twice the lights in the same hour.

Zoo Lights at the Houston Zoo in Hermann Park is a walk-through with timed tickets, which means the bus drops, stages elsewhere and returns at a set time. Moody Gardens runs its Festival of Lights through the season and pairs beautifully with dinner on the island, though that turns the night into a five or six hour booking. Up north, the Prestonwood Forest neighborhood off SH 249 has been decorating street by street for decades and suits groups starting in Cypress, Tomball or Spring. One warning about Lights in the Heights: it is a single evening walking event in Woodland Heights with the streets closed to vehicles, so a bus can leave you at the edge and collect you after, but it cannot drive the route.

A Wednesday in River Oaks beats the Saturday before Christmas by a mile.

What is different about a company party?

The person booking is almost never the person paying, and that changes everything.

Sort out early who approves the quote, whose card holds the reservation and who the driver calls on the night. Those are three different people at most companies and nobody finds out until 6 pm. If the company is covering drinks at the venue, a chartered ride home is the simplest way to make sure nobody drives afterward, and that alone is why plenty of HR teams sign off the line item without much argument.

Then there is the wave problem. Some employees leave at 9 to relieve a babysitter and others stay until the venue turns the lights up, and one bus making one late return strands the first group in a parking garage. Two fixes work: a shuttle looping between the venue and the office garage every 40 minutes, or two fixed departure times printed on the invitation so nobody negotiates. Our corporate events page covers multi-vehicle setups for larger headcounts.

How many hours does it take?

More than the party itself, which is the bit planners miss.

About 53% of Houston requests with a stated duration asked for three to four hours and about 34% asked for five to six. A River Oaks loop with one dinner stop fits the shorter window comfortably. An office party needs the longer one far more often, because the vehicle is on the clock from the first pickup to the last drop-off, including the three hours everybody spends sitting inside the restaurant.

When the venue is close to the office, ask about two separate transfers instead of one continuous booking. Depending on the date it may or may not come out lower, but the question costs nothing. The event timeline builder turns pickup, dinner, lights and return into clock times you can paste into the invitation.

You are booking the dinner too, whether or not the bus moves during it.

What have December quotes looked like?

Here is the whole-year picture, which is the honest place to start.

Among Houston inquiries in our records with a historical quote attached, about 47% fell between $1,000 and $1,499, about 30% between $300 and $999 and about 18% between $1,500 and $1,999. Those cover every month and every vehicle size. They are past quotes rather than a rate sheet, and December weekend dates tend to sit toward the upper end simply because so many groups are chasing the same dozen nights.

Your own number moves with the date, the vehicle class, the total hours and how scattered the pickups are. A Tuesday or Wednesday party is the easiest lever any company has. The cost guide covers the rest of them, and the budget planner keeps transportation sitting next to venue, catering and gifts so the whole thing stays inside what finance approved.

Small things that make the night easier

Sunset in Houston lands around 5:30 in mid-December, which is a gift.

A lights tour can start at 6:00 and still have everyone home by 9:30 on a school night. Cocoa goes in lidded cups. Build the playlist before the ride, because arguing about holiday music burns more of the evening than anyone believes until it happens.

Gift exchanges travel best in one large bin stowed near the driver rather than loose across the seats, where they slide at the first turn onto Kirby. Ask once, when you reserve, what the quoted vehicle allows for food, drinks and decorations, then plan around the answer instead of hoping.

One bin for the gifts. Otherwise you are playing Secret Santa on the floor.

A weeknight lights tour: 19 coworkers from the Energy Corridor

Four hours on a Wednesday, 24 passenger party bus.

  1. 5:45 pm

Pickup at the office garage off I-10 and Eldridge. Coats and the gift bin load first.

  2. 6:30 pm

Upper Kirby for a pre-ordered dinner. Inbound I-10 is slow at this hour, so 40 to 45 minutes is typical.

  3. 7:50 pm

Back aboard with hot chocolate in lidded cups. Short run into River Oaks.

  4. 8:00 pm

Slow loop along River Oaks Boulevard and the side streets. The gift exchange happens on the bus while the lights go past.

  5. 8:50 pm

West on Memorial Drive toward the Energy Corridor, traffic thinner now.

  6. 9:30 pm

Drop at the office garage, fifteen minutes inside the window.

Holiday Parties FAQs

8 of 8 questions

Yes, and decide the policy before you count. It changes the vehicle class outright: a team of 18 fits a mid-size party bus, while the same team with partners needs something in the 34 to 40 seat range. Quote on the larger number and come down later if the RSVPs disappoint.
Considerably. December weekend evenings are what every office and every family wants, and they fill weeks out. Monday through Wednesday gives you more vehicle choice, lighter traffic through the lights neighborhoods, and restaurants far happier to seat a party of thirty.
Yes, and it is a lovely trip if you plan five to six hours for it. The drive down I-45 from central Houston typically runs 55 to 70 minutes each way, and most groups spend two or three hours on the island between the lights and dinner.
Constantly, especially on family and neighborhood outings. Count every child as a passenger, ask about seat belts and car seat options for the specific vehicle you are quoted, and if adults plan to bring drinks, raise it when you book, since the drink rules for the trip are settled then.
Mid-December Saturdays are among the hardest dates of the year to find a vehicle. Six to eight weeks ahead is a safe window — that means reaching out in October or early November. If your date falls on the Saturday before Christmas or New Year's Eve, even earlier is better. If your event is on a weeknight, availability is generally better and you can book closer to the date, though the vehicle pool still narrows as December approaches.
Yes. A popular holiday itinerary starts with a one- to two-hour Christmas light tour through neighborhoods like River Oaks, Prestonwood Forest, or Pecan Grove, followed by a drop-off at a restaurant or bar for the main party portion of the evening. On an hourly booking the vehicle waits during the party and takes the group home afterward. This turns one booking into a full holiday experience. Just let us know the light-tour neighborhoods you want to hit so we can build the route efficiently.
Most vehicles do not come pre-decorated for the holidays, but you are welcome to bring light decorations — garlands, window clings, ornaments tied to handrails — as long as they do not use adhesives, glitter, or anything that leaves a residue. If you want a fully themed experience, ask during booking whether the vehicle you are reserving can accommodate battery-operated string lights or a small Bluetooth speaker for your holiday playlist.
For adult-only company parties, BYOB policies are typically similar to other private rentals — passengers 21 and older can bring their own alcohol, with restrictions on glass containers. Some companies prefer to provide the alcohol and limit consumption for liability reasons; in that case, the organizer controls what is onboard. If any employees are under 21, mention it when booking, since the drink rules for the trip are settled then.
