The short answer

The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo runs about three weeks from late February into mid-March at NRG Park, and getting in and out is the worst part of the night. A group vehicle takes that part away: one pickup, a drop at the park, and a ride waiting when 70,000 people leave the concert at the same moment. Plan five to six hours for a full evening, with a 20 passenger party bus for groups of 14 to 18 and a 28 passenger for 20 to 25.

The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo is three weeks of concerts, carnival rides, barbecue cookoffs, and livestock shows — all centered on NRG Park, where parking is expensive, traffic is heavy, and the walk from a far lot can be a long one in boots. A party bus simplifies rodeo night: the group pre-games on the way, gets dropped near the entrance, and has a ride home waiting through post-rodeo traffic without anyone having to stay sober. Houston Party Ride can help you plan a drop-off and pickup that avoid the worst of the NRG congestion.

Typical group

Rodeo groups commonly range from 14–25, combining friends, couples, and out-of-town visitors in town for the event.

Timing

The rodeo runs for about three weeks from late February to mid-March, and five to six hours covers a full evening. Friday night and weekend concert dates book 4–6 weeks ahead. Weeknights early in the run have better availability.

Vehicles

A 20 passenger party bus fits groups of 14 to 18 and a 28 passenger bus fits 20 to 25, with shuttle buses or coaches for very large groups or corporate rodeo outings.

Why not just drive to the rodeo?

Because the last hour of rodeo night is where the evening either holds together or does not.

NRG Park's on-site lots are largely reserved during the show, and general parking fills early whenever there is a name on the marquee. What is left is a remote lot with a shuttle, the Red Line packed shoulder to shoulder after the concert, or a rideshare queue where surge pricing and a 45 minute wait at ten o'clock are perfectly normal. None of those keeps sixteen people together.

A chartered vehicle folds four or five separate car trips into one and spreads the cost across every seat. It also means nobody is driving home down Kirby after an evening of beer and wine-garden pours. The ride is the part of rodeo night you can actually control, and the group split calculator shows what that control works out to per person.

Everyone remembers the concert. Nobody forgets the parking lot.

How does the evening run?

Rodeo tickets are sold by performance, and each one is two events in a row.

The rodeo competition in NRG Stadium comes first, then that night's concert on the rotating stage, and the same ticket lets you onto the grounds for the carnival, the livestock show in NRG Center, the food and the shopping. Weekday performances start in the evening, weekend ones in the afternoon, so read the ticket before anybody sets a pickup time.

Arriving two hours early is the difference between a rodeo night and a rushed one. That covers the security line, a turkey leg, and a lap through the livestock barns before you find your seats. The stadium runs a clear bag policy, which is worth mentioning in the group chat so everything else stays on the bus. Afterwards, most of the crowd is out within twenty minutes, so the groups who linger at the carnival for half an hour walk out to a notably calmer pickup.

What size vehicle do rodeo groups take?

Neighbors, coworkers, a company's client night. They all land in the teens.

For Houston events scheduled in the first quarter of 2024, the quarter the rodeo sits in, about 50% of requests in our inquiry records were for 11 to 20 passengers. That is one quarter and a small sample, offered as context rather than as a headline, but the all-year Houston share for that band is about 49%, so the pattern holds up.

The 20 Passenger Party Bus takes 14 to 18 with room for hats, which occupy more space than anyone allows for and must never be sat on. Groups in the low twenties want the 28 Passenger Party Bus. Four or five couples dressed for a big concert night might rather have the 16 Passenger Excursion Limo. About 72% of Houston requests naming a vehicle mentioned a party bus and about 16% mentioned a limousine, and rodeo groups follow that split closely.

How many hours should the booking cover?

Count backwards and the answer arrives quickly, usually at six.

A weekday rodeo and concert together run about three hours. Add two hours on the grounds beforehand and 30 to 45 minutes each way from the suburbs, and six is where you are before any thought of a stop afterwards. About 34% of Houston requests with a stated duration asked for five to six hours, which is the bracket rodeo belongs in. The three to four hour window that about 53% of requests specify only works if you skip the grounds entirely and live inside the Loop.

Traffic around NRG deserves its own line in the plan. Loop 610 at Kirby, Fannin and Main all thicken from late afternoon, and post-concert departures crawl for the first mile whatever you do. Build it in the event timeline builder and hand every leg near the park an extra fifteen minutes it will probably use.

Two hours on the grounds is not padding. It is most of why people come.

What else is happening that month?

Rodeo season is bigger than the rodeo, and the calendar around it catches people out.

The World's Championship Bar-B-Que Contest takes over the NRG grounds the weekend before the show opens. Most team tents are invitation only, so a cook-off group generally has a specific tent and wristbands arranged well in advance. The Downtown Rodeo Parade and the arrival of the trail riders share that same Saturday, and Go Texan Day the Friday before puts half the city in boots.

Schools bring students to the livestock show on weekday mornings, and companies host clients in the suites all run long. If yours is a business outing, our corporate events page covers billing and multi-vehicle arrangements, and the concerts page goes further into stadium-show logistics generally.

What have these nights been quoted at?

History only, and history that covers every kind of evening.

Houston inquiries in our records with a historical quote broke down as about 47% between $1,000 and $1,499, about 30% between $300 and $999, and about 18% between $1,500 and $1,999. A six hour Saturday with a bigger bus leans toward the upper end of that. These are past quotes rather than current pricing, and yours will reflect the night, the vehicle, the hours and how far the pickup is.

The lineup is typically announced in January, and the biggest names, especially on weekends and through spring break week, move vehicle demand within days of the announcement. Buy tickets first, reserve the vehicle in the same week, and ask one question while you are at it: where the operator expects to drop and stage at NRG for your date, since the park's charter access points have been known to change from year to year.

Houston Rodeo FAQs

7 of 7 questions

Fridays and Saturdays, any night with a major country or pop headliner, and the week most local districts take spring break. Weeknights early in the run are the easiest by a distance, and the grounds are pleasanter on those nights too.
Yes, if the hours are in the booking. Midtown and Rice Village are both 10 to 15 minutes from NRG once the traffic loosens. Add at least ninety minutes to the reservation for one stop, and decide beforehand rather than on the night, since extending depends on where the driver is due next.
Very much so. The carnival, the petting zoo, the pig races and mutton bustin' are built for them. For a family group, take a weekend afternoon performance, raise the drink rules for the ride when you reserve, and ask about seat belts on the vehicle you are quoted. Our family reunions page has more on mixed-age groups.
Rodeo is not set up for it the way a Texans game is. Lot access is restricted during the show, and the grounds themselves are the pre-event. Save the cooler for the ride in.
NRG Park sets charter and rideshare drop-off areas for each rodeo season, and they can change from year to year with the traffic plan, so confirm the current drop-off and pickup locations when you book rather than relying on last year's. Then agree on a specific pickup marker — a light pole number, a gate, or a landmark — so you can find the bus in the post-show crowd, and share it with everyone in the group before you go in.
Yes, if your dates overlap with the World's Championship Bar-B-Que Contest, which runs at the start of the rodeo. Many groups book a mid-afternoon to late-night window that starts at the cook-off, moves to the carnival midway, and finishes with the evening concert. Whether the vehicle can stay parked nearby as a home base or has to drop off and come back depends on NRG's charter parking for that date, so ask when you book.
Set a firm reunion time and pickup point before anyone leaves the bus. Pick a visible landmark — typically a specific gate number or the base of a carnival ride — and a time. The pickup point is the anchor; even if the group scatters across the grounds, everyone knows where to reconvene. Text the driver if the plan changes, and share the driver's number with at least two people in the group.
