Friendswood still feels like a town rather than a stretch of freeway suburb, which is partly its Quaker founding in the 1890s and partly the fact that no freeway actually goes through it.

Most of the city lies in Galveston County, with the northern part in Harris County along Clear Creek. Two farm roads carry the load. FM 518, which becomes Friendswood Drive through the old town, runs west to Pearland and SH 288 and southeast toward League City and Kemah. FM 2351 heads northeast to I-45 and Clear Lake. Neither is a freeway and both crawl at school hours, so every trip from here opens with 10 to 15 minutes of surface road before anything else happens.

The Boardwalk is the easiest good night out Friendswood has, and it fits inside three hours.

Restaurants, rides and bay views all sit in one walkable place, which is the whole appeal. The catch is that on a summer weekend the lots fill early and the approach roads back up, which is precisely the problem a group vehicle exists to solve. Agree the drop-off point with the driver before you set off, because a bus cannot circle a packed lot waiting for someone to finish their funnel cake, and choose a return spot that is findable after dark. Friendswood is one of the closest starting points in the Houston area for Galveston, and there is still only one road on: I-45 over the causeway.

That road backs up southbound in the late morning on a summer Saturday and northbound from mid-afternoon on Sunday, with a reliability you could set a watch to. Leaving before 10 am or after 1 pm, and heading home before 4 pm or after dinner, is the difference between a drive and a sit.

Island days also run longer than people book for. Between the drive, lunch on the Strand, time on the Seawall and a sunset dinner, seven or eight hours is honest. The Gulf Freeway is the direct line to downtown, Hobby and the stadiums, and on a weekday afternoon it is congested in both directions at once.

For NRG Park or the Medical Center, heading west on FM 518 to SH 288 is often the steadier run even though the map makes it look like a detour. Your driver decides on the day. What you can do from your end is build in 15 minutes of slack on any weekday evening pickup, which costs nothing and fixes most of it.

Not every trip needs a bus, either. Friendswood's older neighbourhoods have big lots, beautiful mature trees and streets that were never imagined with a 40-foot vehicle in mind.

Low branches and roadside ditches are the two obstacles that come up again and again. The newer subdivisions on the west side have wider streets and more cul-de-sacs instead, which trades one problem for another. Either way, a through street or a church lot along FM 518 makes a cleaner meeting point than a driveway, and a dropped pin removes the last of the guesswork.
